If I were to glue a bunch of old cigarette filters together and sew them into a cloth mask, what would that get me?

I am pissed that this is raising the price on 40mm nato gas masks. I have wanted one for years

The important question I think is how much it protects everyone else. The goal of getting everyone to wear masks, beyond driving home how critical this situation is, is to protect people from the mask-wearer.
I think.

I bought an air conditioning filter to sew into masks. Worth a shot.

and of course, none of them are at all effective when worn not covering the nose, or pulled down, or so crappily made (thanks DIY youtubes) that its not sitting on the face.

The purpose of the non medical masks isn’t protection, it’s to reduce the spread of the virus and to save the medical grade masks for medical workers.

My wife made these, there is a pocket inside and we have a bunch of vacuum bags, they say use the material from those filter bags to insert in the pocket. The bags are big so we should only have to cut one or two up.

The homemade masks are more about not letting stuff out that not letting stuff in. spit and snot aren’t going through a cloth mask.

Bought a cheap "single use" type mask (that is still multi use/way overkill for this) for like 15 dollars years ago. Best 15$ I ever spent.

I’ve thought the same thing, my filters are rated to MERV13 which should be close to N95. I haven’t bothered yet because I don’t see the point. The efficacy of masks worn prophylactically seems to be a reducing in face touching. I find dipping my hands in bacon grease has a similar effect.

Despite being of French origin, these are proper good stuff. Not sold for any actual use, as the masks are used and the filters are past their expiration date.

All m asks “expire” after 20 years due to the rubber . Not that they don’t offer protection, but these are originally rated for direct nuclear/chemical attack. It’s still much, much better than nothing. You can also buy new filters.
The ones you posted would be expired as well. New masks run upwards of 150$

Yeah I think you have a point - as far as I understand, us random civilians walking about are wearing masks (cloth or otherwise) to stop SPREADING anything we might have and don’t know about it yet.
The virus can very easily get in ya through your eyes, so basically if you’re in the grocery store and someone sneezes close by, you’re gettin’ the virus whether you have an N95 or a thong on your head, makes no difference if your eyes are open.

Where is this information from? Perhaps the material itself of surgical masks ARE effective at preventing particles from getting through it to those extents, but don’t believe the surgical masks are as effective in reality because of their loose fit.
Surgical masks are being recommended over N95 currently mainly because we want to preserve N95 supplies for those on the front lines, and the intent is mainly to prevent people who may have the virus from spreading it through their breathing/droplets (same logic applies for DIY cloth masks, bandanas, etc being recommended) .
This graphic seeming to imply that surgical masks are actually AS effective as N95 is incorrect .
